The name Duett came from Volvo's idea to make a car for (small) entrepreneurs, which could be used both as a professional and leisure car. (The idea behind it was two cars in one, a Duet!). The Duett can be seen as Volvo's first station wagon, and has become the most popular among small entrepreneurs. Swedish postal services and telephone companies also used the car en masse. The versatile car was developed by Ir. Erik Skogh from Volvo's own design department using the design and technology of the Volvo PV444. That made the car reliable, cheap and easy to maintain. The separate chassis was also used to reinforce the self-supporting body of a PV444 or 544, making it possible to convert it into a convertible, as otherwise the strength of the monocoque will be affected when the roof is removed.
