Born in Richmond in the Karoo of South Africa to Geman immigrant parents, the author achieved several mining and geological qualifications in South Africa and Germany. Following the discovery of lode deposits in the Waterberg district by Adolph Erasmus in 1923, great impetus was gained to search for platinum in South Africa. This discovery was followed up by the location of the Bushveld deposits in September 1924. The author feels that not sufficient credit was given to Dr. Hans Merensky for his part in these discoveries, as he states in the preface, and it is to him whom this book is dedicated. Originally intending to describe these immense Transvaal deposits, the author decided to include the deposits of the Cape Province and Southern Rhodesia, as, geologically speaking, these are a single entity, overlapping political borders. The book includes a chapter on The Mineragraphy and Spectrography of the Sulphidic Platinum Ores of the Bushveld Complex by Dr. H. Schneiderhörn, described by Wagner as a contribution of outstanding importance to the sciences of minerology and economic geology.
