Published by Stanford of London and MacKay of Port Elizabeth in 1877.
Very good indeed in the original green cloth decorated binding. Bright gilt decoration of a man shooting a zebra on the front cover and a bright gilt decoration of a beetle on the spine. All three of the decorated full page plates of paintings by Baines are present, as is the frontispiece photograph of Baines with facsimile signature. Slight rubbing to spine extremities and corners. Neat name stamp of W.S.M. Wood of " Kya Lami, Johannesburg " inside covers and on free endpapers. Neat small bookseller's label inside front cover. The leaves are remarkably clean and unfoxed. The book has been protected for some years in a stiff clear plastic cover, now removed, but this has left small very light magic tape ( not sellotape ) stains on the insides of the boards Magnificent huge map folded up inside pocket in the rear cover, containing two detailed maps on one enormous sheet: the Cape Colony at the bottom and the Gold Regions of the title on the rest of the sheet. In fact the large map is described in an advertisement at the back as including all the country between the Vaal and Zambezi rivers, and includes D'Urban (Durban) , the gold regions, and the seat of war with the Boers. This map is clean with a few small age spots and with many folds as can be expected. A very few of the small folds have tiny closed tears on the corner fold, hardly noticeable.
