Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This volume may be the ultimate in the literature of the horse; both text and illustrations are outstanding. Monique and Hans Dossenbach, authors of Ponies of the World, cover every imaginable aspect of the horse from physiology to equestrian sports, with a generous treatment of the horse in history. They trace the development of modern breeds (including ponies) and equipment (saddles, shoes, carriages). There are sections on hunting, racing and dressage; on jumping and the three-day military event (with Olympic winners). They also examine the sport of driving, with descriptions of harnesses and competitive events. Then they discuss leisure-time riding, and, finally, turn to the last of the equestrian societies around the world. The wealth of detail and stunning photographs3000 illustrations, 700 in colormake this a dream book for the horse-lover. November

From Library Journal

This lavishly illustrated large-format book contains an astounding amount of information on equine evolution, anatomy, breeding, history, and sports. The breathtaking color photographs, especially the two-page spreads, will delight horse lovers. The book has some drawbacks, however. The use of metric measurements without conversions is annoying, as is the interjection of the authors' personal biases (``Mating under human supervision . . . has become a rape . . .''). The eight-page gatefolds may not withstand heavy library use. Though this is an expensive book for the average library, it is worth the money if a beautiful picture book is desired. Joanne K.
