The "First Flush" rainwater filter system is designed to divert small or dissolved pollutants from your roof and gutters into a separate pipe chamber, ensuring that they do not enter the tank. The first flush of water from the roof can contain bacteria from decomposed insects, lizards, bird and animal droppings, as well as concentrated tannic acid. Additionally, it may contain sediments, waterborne heavy metals, and chemical residues, all of which are undesirable elements in a water storage system.
During the initial stages of rainfall, water accumulates slowly in the roof gutter system before flowing out through the downpipe. While gutter mesh and baskets (leaf catchers) can help with leaves and larger debris, they are unable to prevent small particles like dust and bacteria from entering the system. This is why it is recommended to install a First Flush Diverter. By taking preventive measures and diverting pollutants at the outset, you can ensure that your water storage tank remains free from contaminants. Remember, prevention is always better than cure when it comes to maintaining the quality of your water supply.
