Grannie Loosley's Kitchen Album 1860-1920: At Home with an English Family

Jill Watt

In 1863 Mary Ann Loosley began to collect recipes contributed by her friends and relations, soon after her marriage to a rising young builder in the Buckhinghamshire town of High Wycombe. She and her daughter continued the notebook for 60 years, through the Edwardian era and WWI, and into the beginning of the Twenties.

The notebook mirrored the feasts of a busy, hospitable household and its varied circle, whose changing life and pastimes were also being recorded by generations of photographer cousins, in a trunkful of evocative pictures. These recipes and photos have been framed by Jill Watt, Mary Ann's great grand-daughter, in the stories handed down by other relatives - sometimes funny, sometimes touching - of all the characters involved. The result is an enchanting example of the kind of album many families used to keep, but most no longer possess. These have all been grouped "by occasion" (e.g. "Aunt's to Tea") and the recipes have been edited for modern cooks by Alison Burt, and provide a delightfully useful souvenir of entertaining in a small town English home from 1860 to 1920.
