A powerful memoir of twin boxing, and the political struggle in South Africa under apartheid.
Infatuated with the likes of Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis, Gavin Evans became obsessed with boxing at the age of six and was determined to be the heavyweight champion of the world in spite of being the smallest kid in the class. After a less than wildly successful junior amateur career, Gavin resigned himself to the role of spectator in the sport he loved. But growing up in South Africa it was politics which filled the void and into which he poured his energy and pent-up frustrations. Recruited into the ANC underground, he pursued an active role in the struggle against apartheid. This is a personal memoir, and a portrait of two disparate yet strangely connected worlds and the brave, brutal and often bizarre characters that inhabit them both.
