Description: A very large earthenware ale/cider mug/tankard circa 1790 1830. Ref. C-94
Maker: Unknown
Date: Estimated around 1790 - 1830
History: This is a very large earthenware tankard/mug capable of holding 1.14 litres
Marks/Observations: Hand decorated in a cobalt blue on blue-white background.  Cobalt blue was a favourite colour as it did not fade during the glaze firing. There is a certain amount of flowing of the blue colour. The glazing is not perfect which attests to the earlier date and rough glazing patches can be observed. Blowholes, bubbles and black charcoal spots from the firing in the furnace are evident, especially on the rim.  This appears to be a hand thrown tankard, being slightly wider at the mouth than near the base.  The handle is attached by sprigged leaf design terminals
Condition: Very good throughout, some surface scratches, no chips, cracks or restoration noticed
Dimensions: Height 15.5 cm, diameter 12 cm

Price: R850.00
