Olive Emily Albertina Schreiner (1855-1920)South African author. During the Anglo-Boer War, she took the part of the Boer Republics. Her eloquent defence of the Boers led to alienation from her English-speaking family and many of her friends, isolation, ostracism and vituperation, and she spent the greater part of the war in the small Karoo village of Hanover, experiencing intense loneliness and depression, and suffering a breakdown from which she never fully recovered. This book contains her unpublished letters.
