Cindy Hayes knows she no longer believes in the legal system the way she used to. The decision is made - she's leaving her job as Chief Prosecutor of the Sex Crimes Unit in the District Attorney's office to become Director of the Boulder County Rape Crisis Centre. But she hasn't been long in her new position when she finds herself agreeing to defend a death row murderer also convicted of rape - although she abhors the crime he's committed, she abhors the death penalty even more.
Despite the tension her acceptance of the case is causing at the Rape Crisis Centre, her client's, Jason Smiley's, claims of innocence are so persuasive that Cindy finds herself starting to believe him. But the more she becomes involved in his case the more the rest of her life begins to go awry - including her relationship with criminal lawyer Sam Holt who has also had dealings with Smiley. And who, Cindy realises, is trying to tell her that the man she's now convinced herself is the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice is as dangerous as they come...
