Victorian Bisque porcelain 'Chicken' cream jug 1891-1910 Ref. J/26
Here is something of interest! This little bisque cream jug 'fairing' was likely to have been made for the English fairs. Although no makers mark, it is stamped 'Germany' on the base. and, was possibly made by either Hertwig or Heuback, both companies favoring the more subtle colors. A large number of 'fairings' as they were called, were exported by these two companies to England, the fairs being a large market for the smaller towns and villages. Although the exterior of the jug has been overpainted on the unglazed bisque, the interior was glazed. This was most likely to keep the jug completely waterproof, unglazed articles may well have absorbed the contents to some extent. In very good condition, with no chips or cracks but with some loss of the original paint, this little jug remains a very collectible and unique piece. It stands 8.60 cm high ( to the top of the head) and 14 cm long with a width of 6.5 cm.
