USA-Scott #2-FORGERY-1847-10c blk used. Price R350
Forgery Identification:
- Inspecting the stamp, I soon had a strong suspicion that it is a forgery.
- After searching the internet, an exact copy of mine was found (see the StampCommunity attachment). It even has the same Double Transfer error in the right border. This copy shows the complete bottom part of the stamp (mine is cut off at bottom). When inspecting the bottom margin it is clear that the Printer initials R,W,H & E is missing (the last follow on enlargment shows how the R,W,H & E initials look on the original stamp.
- The next attachment shows on TheSwedishTiger website that my stamp is a well known copy (the top left is my stamp, next to the genuine stamp).
PS The one below is the famous Sperati forgery, next to the genuine stamp.
- The attachment after that shows for a site that shows all known forgeries, the original plus 6 forgeries (mine is also one shown).
Condition:
- bottom frame line missing and edge slightly irregular,
- small top left corner fold, with small tear in fold (see enlarged photos),
- paper yellowish.
Notes:
- My stamp has a black postmark and the StampCommunity copy has a red postmark.
This shows that these forgeries often defied postmaster detection.
- Forgeries are often more scarce than the original, which makes them sought after by collectors, and the value is sometimes not much less than the Original (for famous forgers).
- Catalogue Value for Original $1,995 = R36,000.
My R350 asking price gives a 99% markdown on original #2 CV.
