First edition. We have not been able to trace another copy of the original Act and Regulations. We have noted a copy of only the Regulations for sale in the UK dated 1906. Apparently there is a copy of the book in the National Library of South Africa.

In the context of Southern Africa during the era of colonisation, the formation of volunteer forces or units in support of the colonial powers had been largely impelled by compulsion and free will. In South Africa, a fixed law pertaining to the regulations and establishment of volunteer forces was enacted. In compliance with the Colonial Forces Act of 1892, every voluntary force or military unit stood under the authority of the governor (Hendrich, The Afrikander Volunteer Corps and the Participation of Afrikaners in Conflicts in Rhodesia, 1893-1897, in Scientia Militaria, 40,1, 2012).

Tables in the text.

Original red linen covered stiff card boards made to look like textured imitation leather, gilt title to the upper panel. (See close-up photographs).
Visible shelf wear and tear on all edges and corners as well as the spine, with visible handling marks. Still in very good condition considering its age and function as a work of reference. Various marks on various pages throughout the book.
The hinges are split but the text block is still attached to the spine.
Text block is still tight and intact.
1st Edition. Published by W A Richards & Sons, Government Printers, Cape Town, 1892.
Soft Cover. Condition: Good considering its age.
    Binding Condition: Good
    Overall Condition: Good
    Size: Duodecimo size, 183mm X 127mm X 11mm.

An extremely rare collectable. A very good copy considering its age.

See photographs for detail.
