Ambohimanga is a hill and traditional fortified royal settlement in Madagascar, located approximately 24 kilometers northeast of the capital city of Antananarivo.

The royal hill of Ambohimanga is an exceptional testimony to the civilization that developed in the central Malagasy Highlands from the 15th to the 19th century, and cultural and spiritual traditions, the worship of Kings and Ancestors, which are closely associated . The royal hill of Ambohimanga is the cradle of the kingdom and the dynasty that made Madagascar a modern and internationally recognized state from 1817. It is associated with strong identity and emotional values of the sacredness of the site through its tombs revered royals, its many places of worship and its royal trees with majestic look. Religious capital and holy city of the kingdom of Madagascar in the nineteenth century, the royal hill was the burial place of its sovereigns. The site contains clear archaeological evidence of the ancient exercise of power and justice. It is still at the heart of the religious practices of many Malagasy and is a living memory of traditional religion.
The royal hill of Ambohimanga is made up of a fortification system consisting of a series of ditches and 14 fortified stone portals, a royal city composed of a coherent set of buildings delimited by a royal enclosure and combining a square public (the Fidasiana), royal trees, a place of justice, other natural or built places of worship, a set of sacred places as well as cultivated fields. The royal city properly so called includes two palaces and a small pavilion, an ox pit, two sacred basins and four royal tombs. In addition, the designated property is home to the remains of a primary forest that conserves many endemic plant species and medicinal plants.
