John Gibson Lockhart (12 June 1794 - 25 November 1854) was a Scottish critic, novelist and editor. He is best known as the author of a biography of his father-in-law Sir Walter Scott (1837-38; enlarged 1839), which has been called the second most admirable biography in the English language after Boswell's Life of Johnson. First published 1897 in two volumes by John C Nimmo, London, and Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. R560 for both volumes. Condition: Good for its age. Ex library books with library stamps inside. Pages neat and clean. Front and back hinges exposed in Vol II, back hinge exposed in Vol I. Gilded family crest on both covers. Stains and wear and tear on covers and edges. Spines of both volumes have some damage.
