Description: Late 18th Century French faience Hand-painted Plate. Ref. P-76
Maker: Most likely Strasbourg, France.
Date: Estimated 1780 - 1810
History: 18th century French Faience tin glazed plate from France. Bold, well defined cerise floral hand painted on white ground.
Marks/Observations: Note the absence of a footrim on the back of the plate, and, the uneven glaze which shows a ripple effect, all pointing to an early age. Three heavy stilt marks can be observed on the back of the plate. Also note the rough finish to the glaze (unlike the shiny, smooth glaze found on modern pottery), the blowholes and the small black spots usually associated with wood fired kilns. There is an uneven blob of ceramic on the front of the plate.  The decoration is known as a overglaze decoration, the plate would have been fired at a higher temperature to obtain the white tin glaze and then hand painted and re-fired at a lower temperature as the colours used were not capable of withstanding the initial firing.
Condition: All in all, the plate remains in very good condition with no chips. Some very slight paint loss to the floral decorations
Dimensions: Diameter 24 cm, height 2.6 cm

Price: R750.00
