Title:  Vintage Royal Doulton Sir Roger De Coverley Decorative Wall Plate D5814.
Manufacturer: Royal Doulton, made in England.
Diameter: 28.5cm.
Info: A large Charger plate from the Sir Roger de Coverley series of seven scenes based on the characters created by Thomas Steele for The Spectator first published in 1711.
Impressed with 5.38 on the base which indicates a manufacturing date of May 1938.
Also dated 1938 by the # 11 next to the Crown on the stamp, with RD that can be added to 1927 to obtain a year of production.
An English squire of Queen Anne's reign, Sir Roger exemplified the values of an old country gentleman, and was portrayed as a lovable but somewhat ridiculous character.
Here Sir Roger is shown playing bowls with Mr Spectator.
Roger de Coverley is also the name of an English country dance and a Scottish country dance from the early 1700's.
Royal Doulton is an English ceramic and home accessories manufacturer founded in 1815. Operating originally in Vauxhall, London, later moving to Lambeth, in 1882 it opened a factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, in the centre of English pottery.  From 1853 to 1902 its wares were marked Doulton & Co., then from 1902, when a royal warrant was given, Royal Doulton.
Condition: Very Good, no issues on the plate, no cracks or chips, the pattern and colouring is in very good condition, the edges are good and no crazing on the glaze.
