Poe is an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic. He is credited with writing the first detective story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue. His most famous poem, The Raven, made him instantly famous. He married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1836. When she died of tuberculosis 11 years later, his lifelong struggle with depression and alcoholism worsened. He died at 40, and to this day the cause of his death is not known.
