The story of the infamous and disastrous Jameson Raid written by an insider.

The author, Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Marshall Hole (16 May 1865 - 18 May 1941), met the mine magnate and politician Cecil John Rhodes in Kimberley. Rhodes offered him a job as the first clerk of the newly formed British South African Company. He was also Dr Leander Starr Jameson's private secretary in Rhodesia from 1891 to 1893. Of Jameson he writes: "... I was caught in the magic of the spell which he exerted ... on everybody near him". Hole was acquainted with some of the leaders of the Reform Movement in Johannesburg, while many that took part in the actual Raid were among his most intimate friends. With historical black and white photographs and a fold-out map.
First published 1930 by Philip Allen, London. Condition: An good, sturdy, readable copy. Several pages foxed and stained, but all text legible. Page edges foxed. Previous owner's name in front. Cover good, except for wear and tear at head and tail of spine. Title in gilt on spine.
