About this Item
There is a neat flowing hand signature by Tretchikoff and inscription next to his frontispiece portrait: "To Margaret with my sincere best wishes. V. Tretchikoff 19-12-52". Very good condition, clean and tight, in gold titled white leatherette boards. in a very good slipcase decorated with the Dying Swan print as a raised plate on the front. The inside board and the first four leaves have a tiny fully repaired hole . Inscribed to Margaret ("Peggy") Roscoe, who, after her Cape Town years, lived near Hartley, Southern Rhodesia ( now Chegutu, Zimbabwe ), but socialised with Tretchikoff on numerous occasions, including canasta sessions with him and his wife at their splendid mansion in Bishopscourt, Cape Town. Her iconic painting Crayfish Seller, which she bought prior to 1952, was later exhibited in Durban with her permission in 1959, and became one of the subjects of the artist's many and profuse lithographic reproductions, all iconic monuments to mid century "kitsch". She later made a Christmas card of her painting on a raised plate, a scarce original of which is also for sale by us at the time of listing. Seller Inventory # 80263
