A group of 15 newspaper clippings from 1952-1959 on Vladimir Tretchikoff including the attack piece by author and critic Matthys Bokhorst and letters to the editor in response

About this Item

A group of carefully collected newspaper clippings from 1950s South African newspapers on the subject of the artist Vladimir Tretchikoff, including the withering attack piece by author and critc Matthys Bokhorst entitled Painter Expounds "Lachrymose". "Cheap Sensation for the Masses", which appeared in the Cape Times on Tuesday, September 16, 1952. There are also three Letters to the Editor in response showing the frenzy of discussion surrounding "Tretchie" in 1950s South Africa. Other articles include photos and deal with huge art sales and records broken, comparisons with other artists and his relative huge success. Tretchikoff went on to become one of the most reproduced and successful artists of the 1960s worldwide and his work is now exhibited by the South African National Gallery despite his being once reviled by cogniscenti such as Irma Stern, who was herself reviled and then celebrated by cogniscenti before him. These clippings were collected by Peggy Roscoe , who owned the painting Crawfish Seller and was a patron and friend of the artist. Seller Inventory # 80222
