Antique Parian Figure of 'DOROTHEA' From the novel 'Don Quixote' Circa 1847-1850 Ref. No. OR-10

Description: Parian figure of 'Dorothea',a character in the story of Don Quixote.
Maker: Minton. The sculptor was John Bell, born 1811 - died 1895.The Victoria and Albert Museum states, "Figure of a girl 'Dorothea' in unglazed white porcelain parian ware, Minton & Co. Stoke-on-Trent, made for Felix Summerly's Art Manufactures, ca. 1847-1850"
Date: The diamond-shaped Registered mark shows the date as 1847.
History:The original life-sized marble figure of this piece was originally made in 1838 by John Bell for Lord Lansdowne. The subject is from the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote.
Introduced in 1851 at the Great Exhibition, it was reproduced a number of times over the following two decades. Originally sold at the very expensive price of two guineas,it probably remains the most popular parian figure produced from those times. The Minton ceramic factory produced over 500 Parian figures between 1845 and 1910.
Marks/Observations:  Inscribed by hand on the base is 'No. 185', evidently, an early piece.   Impressed Marks are an elongated 'diamond' mark with two dots,  Minton's symbol for 1846 , 'P' for Parian,  Arrow with three dots, Minton's mark for early Parian figures from 1845-1850, 'M' for Minton. Also found is the mark of Summerly's Art Manufacturers, the initials 'FS' for Felix Summerly and the name 'John Bell'
Condition: Slight damage (restored) to her left wrist and crack around the base of her cap. Slight chip to base and evidence of two restored chips to base.Small 'firing' marks are observed.
Dimensions: Height 35.5 cm, corresponding to 14" which was the height of the Minton's figure -later reproductions by other companies were at least 2.5cm smaller.
Price: R3000.00
Shipping: Price to be advised .
