Fundamentals of Ecology, which Odum first published in 1953 with his younger brother and fellow ecologist Howard, was the disciplines only textbook for more than a decade. Odum is lionised throughout science as the father of modern ecology and recognised by the University of Georgia as the founder of what became the world's first stand-alone college of ecology. Eugene Odum pioneered the concept of the ecosystem as the holistic understanding of the environment as a system of interlocking biotic communities. In his landmark book, Odum argued that we cannot hope to understand the environment without first appreciating the complex biological economy of shared resources, competition and cooperation. In this 3rd edition all chapters from the 2nd edition have been extensively revised; three completely new chapters have been added to Part I, and Part 3 has been completely rewritten.
Third edition published 1971 by WB Saunders, Philadelphia, London, Toronto. Condition: Good. No jacket.
