Georgian teacup and saucer Ref.C1 1815-1825
The shape of this beautiful and rare soft paste porcelain tea cup and saucer with the "London" handle was typical of a number of early factories such as, Rathbone, New Hall, Hilditch, Masons and Sunderland just to name a few. There were approximately 17 small companies operating at this time, manufacturing predominantly jugs, mugs and cups.
Sadly, there appears to be little product-related documentation left from any of these relatively small, obscure manufacturers, such as pattern books or product lists with recognizable descriptions.
The charming cup and saucer duo seen above (typically unmarked) shows a distinct type of English filled-in or clobbered transfer on a fine translucent white porcelain pearlware which appeared for a brief period in 1820s during the reign of George IV. This polychrome transfer with strong, bright colours which were hand-painted as an over-glaze was usually done by children, as young as seven years old. Both pieces show 'lustre' rims.
The wide, deep saucer without a centre 'well' for the cup to sit in, is indicitive for this time period. Also is the glazing which shows a 'orange-peel' effect, the technique of glazing not being fully understood. The hand-painted (clobbered) design shows that the paints used were not heat resistant.
The cup and saucer are both in very good condition with no cracks or chips, but, a few, small paint flakes can be seen. The duo shows a typical 'Chinoiserie' design, so beloved by the Georgians. It shows a seated lady playing a musical instrument, while two attendants, one with a fan and one with an umbrella(?) flank her on each side. This is possibly from Hilditch, the cup shape and the vibrant colours being typical of this company.
The cup stands 6.0cm high to the top of the rim with a diameter of 8.7cm. The saucer stands 3.2cm high with a diameter of 14.3 cm.
