Ferndale Editions, 1981, Large-format hardback with removable protective plastic wrap - Architecture  - 448pp.
This is the first major book on mediaeval domestic architecture for over a hundred years--a volume substantial in content as in appearance, massively and finely illustrated, in every sense worthy of its great subject.
The period covered is from the Norman Conquest to 1540. Margaret E. Wood (later Margaret Kaines-Thomas; 1908 1981) was an English archaeologist and author specialising in domestic architecture of the Middle Ages. Wood is praised for writing the first volume dedicated to mediaeval domestic architecture since publications in 1851 and 1819 by Hudson Turner and John Henry Parker, which remained the authority on the subject until Wood's book THE ENGLISH MEDIAEVAL HOUSE was published.
Each chapter of the book focuses on different elements of the medieval house, from the Hall to the Solar, the Parlour and Gatehouse, and on particular types of houses, including Tower Houses and Lodgings.
