J. M. Dent, 1968, Vintage Hardback with removable protective plastic wrap  - Modern Classics - 152pp.

Here, surely, is pre-Edwardian English fiction at its classic finest. But this is not Heart of Darkness, and the river is not the Congo. Actually, it's the Thames, and the narrator is not Marlow but J, or Jerome, K Jerome.

A humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston,  which Jerome originally wrote as a travel guide. As the humorous anecdotes took over the story, it eventually turned into a masterpiece of comedy.

Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889, became an instant success and has never been out of print. It ranks among The Guardian's top one hundred best English novels of all time. When the book was first published, it was not liked by critics, who considered the writing flippant. The book professed no wish to improve the reader's mind, intent merely on sharing the excitement and fun of a boating holiday.
