Description: A rare 'Bristol' manganese coloured "Delft' wall tile Ref.#CL-10

Maker: Unknown but likely to be early Bristol tin glazed

Date: Thought to date to the 1750's, although the 'purple' colour (as shown on the tile) was introduced in England during the late 1600's

History: Dutch potters started working in England between 1676 and 1716 and soon established potteries at Bristol and Liverpool. Designs, all hand painted, were copied from the Dutch 'Delft'. Early seventeenth-century London delftware tiles were cut in a square and averaged 13mm to 16mm in thickness, similar to their Dutch counterparts. Those manufactured in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries averaged a thickness of 6.5 mm with slightly beveled edges as is shown in the tile offered.A design was drawn on paper and 'pricked' to create numerous pinholes. This was placed on the tin glazed tile and fine powdered charcoal was rubbed through the pinholes creating a 'design'. The artist would then follow the tracing with  paint, sometimes adding his own ideas to the tile. The tile was then fired for a second time.

Marks/Observations: A very coarse soft clay was used as can be seen on the reverse. The tile shows beveled edges, some slight chips are evident. Circular motif showing a a tablet marked from 1 to X Roman numerals, possible portraying Moses and the Ten Commandments. Note the typical 'oxhead' design in the four corners. Some 'blow holes' on the surface from heating in the kiln.

Condition: Good overall condition.

Dimensions: 12.8cm square and 8mm in thickness

Price: R650.00
