Antique Georgian Hilditch & Son Porcelain "Sleeping Beauty & Cupid" duo c1822-1830 Ref. C12
This duo is very likely to have been made by Hilditch and Son.  Not much is known about Hilditch and Son. They were a short lived (1822-1830) and purely Georgian manufacturer of earthenwares and porcelain at Lane End in North Staffordshire. Most designs were printed often in underglaze blue,or in sepia with on glaze enamelled colours ('clobbering'). Fine quality porcelain tea wares were a speciality of the company and reflect the taste of the time. The 'H&S' mark in various forms is relatively scarce, and many unmarked and mainly clobbered tea cups, milk jugs etc can be attributed to Hilditch.

The charming cup and saucer duo shown above (typically unmarked) is a distinct type of English filled-in or clobbered transfer on a fine translucent white porcelain pearlware which appeared for a brief period in 1820s during the reign of George IV. They show the typical London Shape teacup style, with a polychrome transfer decoration of a sleeping Lady with attendant male figure.  On the opposite of the cup, we find 'Cupid' with his arrow in one hand and a chalice in the other. The inside rim of the cup and saucer show a delicate leaf design in a gold lustre.
There were approximately 17 small companies operating at this time, manufacturing predominantly jugs, mugs and cups.  These Georgian pieces stand out against many other potteries, due to their brightly enamelled colouring which were hand-painted as an over-glaze. Sadly, there appears to be little product-related documentation left from any of these relatively small, obscure manufacturers, such as pattern books or product lists with recognisable descriptions.
The cup and saucer as shown, are both in excellent condition with just a slight loss of paint around the rims. No cracks or chips are evident. A typical heavier glaze showing an 'orange-peel' effect and bubbles are seen, together with numerous small black 'spots', being the dust from the coal used in the kilns. Coal dust was the bane of the pottery industry.

The cup stands 6.0cm high with a diameter of 9cm at the rim.The saucer stands 3.6cm high with a diameter of 14.4 cm. Typical of the day, there is no centre 'well' for the cup to sit in.

Please note, I am NOT a qualified archaeologist/antiquarian and the description I have given is based on research of the subject.
This is a genuine antique. The classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
