Stella Mary Bailey ( nee Chiappini ) was a painter. She married Sir John Milner Bailey, son of Sir Abe Bailey. She was widowed a year later in 1946. Her portrait was painted by her friend Irma Stern ( see above ). Bookplate of David van Breda Smith. The illustrations of this groundbreaking book of Xhosa legends were painted by Stella Bailey during her wanderings around South Africa.
