Cape Gooseberries are closely related to the tomatillo and the Chinese lantern. It is an annual in temperate locations, but perennial in the tropics. As a perennial, it develops into a diffusely branched shrub reaching 1-1.6m in height. The leaves are velvety and heart-shaped. The hermaphrodite (flower is both male and female) flower is bell-shaped and drooping. The calyx expands after the flower falls, ultimately forming a beige husk fully enclosing the fruit.
The fruit is a yellow and round berry with a sweet but mildly tart flavour.
Cape Gooseberries contain moderate levels of vitamin C, thiamin, and niacin.
The analyses of oil mainly in the seeds, showed that linoleic acid and oleic acid were the main fatty acids, beta-sitosterol and campesterol were principal phytosterols, and the oil contained vitamin K and beta-carotene.
