Fish Chilli Peppers are part of Capsicum Annuum family. It is a small African-American heirloom that comes from the 1870s, and has some interesting history.
It was commonly used in oyster bars and crab houses. Fish Chilli Peppers popularity declined due to urbanization and almost became distinct. It was saved in the 1940s by Horace Pippin. He provided seeds to a beekeeper, H. Ralph Weaver in change for bee sting therapy. The seeds stayed in the Weaver family until 1995 when William Woys Weaver introduced the seeds to the public via the Seed Savers Exchange yearbook.
It is considered a moderately hot chilli pepper variety with a range from 5000 to 30000 SHU on the Scoville scale. The peppers ripen from cream white to dark red which makes them a beautiful ornamental plant to look at while you enjoy a nice spicy dish.
