A CLASSIC, 'HALLMARK DESIGN':  MAGNIFICENT 'NEMO' VASE DESIGNED BY MAX KANNEGIESER FOR BORSKE SKLO IN 1963

A RARE AND HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER VASE IN MINT CONDITION

THIS IS AN UNUSUALLY LARGE VERSION OF THE DESIGN

Absolutely beautiful optical and hand painted enameled vase form the much respected Borske Sklo factory of Czechoslovakia, designed by Max Kannegiesser in 1963 - in exquisite transparent enameled pastel colours of jade, amethyst and gold. The range was entitled Nemo, consisting of many differing shapes and sizes, whereby it was without doubt one of the most successful designs of the early 60's, being exported to over 89 countries across the world.

The mould blown range was made up of four fused sections whereby the only trace of this can be seen on the vases base with a cross gradually descending into a slightly sunken moulded base. The vase gradually ascends outwards to form a beautifully formed globular shape. The piece is finished with a flattened, circular highly polished plateau'd mouth rim which surmounts the sublime beauty of the vases decoration below. The vases decoration is made up of shallow 'water lily'-like shallow pools of enameled glass arranged in circles at its lower reaches.

The 'water lily pools' central areas sit proud of the vases clear ground - with their very outer limits being slightly sunken into the vases delicate walls. The exquisitely beautiful pastels tones of azure, duck egg blue, jade, amethyst and gold are set amongst lily pads with no colour at all, allowing each coloured globule to receive maximum impact. The circular pools of the vases lower & mid region give rise to more oval shaped pools at the midpoint & in turn, onto more circular shapes seen gracing its upper slopes.

The beautiful enameled colours are in perfect harmony with each other with the clear portals providing rest for the eye & the gilded lily pads providing that magical appearance of extravagance & opulence.

The piece is thin walled whereas its very feminine and delicate appearance belies its actual strength & robustness. Apart form the vases obvious beauty, the range was also highly prized for the optical qualities of the transparent & semi transparent portals. These gave rise to each lily pad window creating an optical illusion of smaller windows, creating magical subtle rainbow like mirrored images.

Both natural & unnatural light reflects, refracts and diffuses light in all manner of directions to great effect. Light shimmers from each portal and from the vase's gentle arcing curvature and mouths rim. The result was the fusion of more traditional Czech enameling effects with a strong modern innovative twist.
