Notes On South African Affairs
by William B. Boyce
Published by C. Struik, 1971
'William Bennington Boyce was the trusted adviser to Sir Benjamin d'Urban during the Sixth Ka**ir War, 1834-1835. However, the part played by Wesleyan missionaries during that war brought them into disfavour in England, and Boyce himself was strongly criticised. This led him to set out his opinions unequivocally in his "Notes on South African Affairs". He pays much attention to Captain Stockenstrom's Border Policy and makes many suggestions on it. He also deals with the Great Trek and describes the relation of the emigrant Boers towards the aborigines. Boyce's knowledge of the Xhosa and their language was far superior to many important persons of the time and he had written and published the first ever Xhosa grammar. Other important persons whom he deals with in detail are Piet Retief, Dingaan, Dr John Phillips (sic), William Shaw, Thomas Pringle and John Fairbairn.'
