Mrs Maturin has an engaging, entertaining turn of phrase and view of life: "Nov. 30, 1904 . I have heard of a dear little cottage in a Dutch dorp, twelve miles out of Johannesburg, where, so far, they have only had one murder, one house blown up by dynamite, another set fire to by a man who had insured it and was on his last legs financially . and four housebreakings by Chinese in four months . there is a scramble for it because it is so safe."
