Sidney Nolan is the most celebrated Australian artist of his generation, with a reputation that has spread far beyond his native shores to make him a prominent - yet enigmatic - figure on the international scene.
Nolan's output of paintings, graphics, book illustrations and theatre designs has been prolific. He is no less energetic now than at any time during the past seventy years, planning his future with the fervour of one who still has truths to learn about life and art, and committed to a workload that would daunt many a younger man.

Throughout much of his life, Sidney Nolan has made his home in Britain and has thus been a subject to a certain duality of definition, being described either as an Australian expatriate or as an English painter with his artistic soul on the other side of the world. Recently, however, the growing influence of his Celtic ancestry has drawn him more closely to the spirit of his famous series of paintings about the Irish-Australian bushranger Ned Kelly, whose dying words provided the title for this book.

During much of his eventful career Sidney Nolan has been an inveterate traveller, this biography describes for the first time his long and colourful journey to fame.
