Hardcover published by Max Parrish. The jacket is worn and torn, and is missing a piece at the foot of the spine. The boards are neat and square, with a gilt figure of a man on the front, but the spine is slightly cocked. An ex-libris stamp appears on the inside front pictorial paste-downs, being a map of northern South America. The title page is missing, otherwise all pages are clean and unmarked. The author was an officer of the Salvation Army in 1928 who was given the task of going to the French penal settlement in French Guiana, to live and work among the convicts in an effort to abolish the settlement.
