'South Africa: Do not be led astray by unpractical idealism!'
The author, born in Northern Rhodesia, experienced the dissolution of the Federation of the Rhodesias and Nyasaland. To him it signified the failure of a positive experiment in creating a multiracial state. He was a member of Parliament for many years, first of North Rhodesia and then of the Federal Parliament. In 1954 he strongly recommended that the Federation be divided into black and white areas, to no avail. He emigrated to South Africa, leaving most of his possessions behind. His warning to South Africa to not to follow Rhodesia's path fell on deaf ears.
