Title: The Strollers

Author: Lesley Beake

Publisher: Maskew Miller Longman

Year: 1987

Number of pages: 104

ISBN: 9780636010567

Synopsis: Johnny leaves his poverty-stricken, tension-filled home on the Cape Flats for the seeming freedom of life on the streets. He joins the strollers, the street children who beg from strangers, raid rubbish bins, sleep wherever they can find shelter and jol on the Parade. The strollers are a motley bunch : among them are Abel, the film fanatic; and Finkie, the sweet-natured boy who coughs and coughs. During his time with the strollers, Johnny meets the notorious Spider men, the equally feared Katjie's mob and learns that there is more to freedom than he thought. Winner 1992 Sir Percy Fitzpatrick prize for literature. Young Africa Award 1988.
