Johnny leaves his poverty-stricken, tension-filled home on the Cape Flats for the seeming freedom of life on the streets. He joins the strollers, the street children who beg from strangers, raid rubbish bins, sleep wherever they can find shelter and jol on the Parade. The strollers are a motley bunch : among them are Abel, the film fanatic; and Finkie, the sweet-natured boy who coughs and coughs. During his time with the strollers, Johnny meets the notorious Spider men, the equally feared Katjie's mob and learns that there is more to freedom than he thought.
