Royal Mail Ship "Scot" was a line of the Union Line, which later amalgamated with the Castle Line to form the Union-Castle Line. The artist paints over 20 scenes from a journey from Southamption right round South Africa to Mozambique and back.

Original black endpapers attached to boards. All the plates are in n very good conditon. Additional thick leaves with humorous sketch drawings of daily life on board, with explanatory text, also in very good condition with no tears.. All edges gilt. Boards are in red leather with elaborate gilt decoration in very good condition. The plates include superb contemporary illustrations of South African scenes, particularly various ports of call like Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban, and also life on board a ship of the Union Line, H.M.S. Scot. Additional chromolithograph colour illustrations of inter alia the Karoo, St. John's River - Pondoland, Buffalo River, Wynberg, Lourenco Marques, Jamestown - St. Helena, Ascension, Tenerife, and Madeira. Seven sketches of Kimberley.
