Manufacturer: Sokkisha Co Ltd, Made In Japan, circa early 1970's.
Case Height: 4.5cm.
Case Length: 30cm.
Case Depth: 11cm.
Info: A planimeter is a table-top instrument for measuring areas, usually the areas of irregular regions on a map or photograph, making this instrument remarkably versatile.
In the original design of polar planimeters pioneered by Jakob Amsler, the tracer and pole arms are permanently attached by a hinged joint.
In 1894, Gottlieb Coradi introduced the compensating polar planimeter, based on a design patented by Lang (and sometimes called the LangCoradi planimeter) in 1893 in Switzerland.
This design has persisted essentially unchanged to the present day.
Sokkisha Company was founded by a group of 13 people in 1920. It started manufacturing transits in a small workshop in Tokyo in 1920, at first limited to the Japanese market, Sokkisha soon began to develop precision measuring instruments and quickly became a popular manufacturer in Japan.
The worldwide expansion started with the United States.
The American company Lietz became the exclusive distributor for Sokkisha instruments in the 1970s.
In 1984 Sokkisha took over Lietz and becoming the world's largest manufacturer of surveying and measuring instruments.
In the early 1990s, Sokkisha started a corporate identity project to improve and expand the company's global marketing. The result of this project was a new brand name: Sokkia.
In 2008, Sokkia became a fully wholly owned subsidiary of Topcon.
