FROM 'TRIUMPHS AND LAMENTS : A PROJECT FOR ROME' WOODCUT SERIES

"Triumphs and Laments: Tiber River Rome" is a renowned public art project created by William Kentridge. Situated along the banks of the Tiber River in Rome, Italy, the project consists of a series of large-scale murals depicting the city's history. Kentridge's artwork celebrates Rome's triumphs and laments its challenges throughout the centuries, using his signature style of combining drawing, animation, and sculpture. The project serves as a thought-provoking visual narrative that highlights the cultural significance of the Tiber River and its impact on the city's past and present.

The images in William Kentridge's "Triumphs and Laments: Tiber River Rome" were applied to the wall using a technique known as reverse graffiti or "subtractive mural." Instead of adding paint to the wall, Kentridge and his team used high-pressure water hoses to clean specific areas of the dirty surface, creating the desired images. By removing the accumulated grime and pollution, the cleaned sections revealed the artwork in negative, contrasting with the surrounding darker areas. This unique approach allowed Kentridge to create his murals without using traditional painting methods, leaving a lasting impression on the cityscape while simultaneously drawing attention to the impact of time and human activity on the Tiber River and Rome itself.
