This is a book about African hunters, more specifically those early European settlers and sportsmen who hunted in Africa. The book covers a time period approximately from 1800-1945, with a few exceptions outside these dates. The term "hunter" is defined loosely, by necessity, for just about all the explorers, missionaries, prospectors, and colonists on the so called Dark Continent survived at least in part on the fruits of the chase.
A few people are profiled just to illustrate a particular point about life in Old Africa, but the author focused to a large extent on those who made their living "off their guns": the ivory hunters, the hide hunters, and many others who made their livelihood with a rifle.
