VOLVO PV 444

CARD No. 17830

PV444E = 1953/54 = B4B = 44 hk/hp.

Unused Swedish Nostalgi postcards, either A5-size (21 x 15 cm) or A6-size (15 x 10,5 cm) and showing various car makes. These cards were issued by Forlag (publisher) Håkan Eriksson in Falkenberg and they are very collectable. All are having a 5-digit code (A5) or a 3-digit code (A6) on the back side which was the order code when the publisher was still in business. The cards are barcoded.

The PV444 was Volvo's first uni-body car. Its body structure was influenced by the 1939 Hanomag 1,3 litre, which was purchased and studied by Volvo engineers. It was also the first Volvo in almost 20 years to come with a 4-cylinder engine (earlier models had used side-valve straight sixes). The first PV444s were powered by a 40 PS 1.4 L inline-four engine designated the B4B, with three main bearings, overhead valves, and a single downdraft carburettor. The power of this engine increased to 44 PS (32 kW) in October 1950, and to 51 PS (38 kW) in October 1955. US models, beginning to appear in the US in early 1956, received an up-rated version called the B14A which was given twin side-draft 1½ in S.U. carburetors for a total of 70 hp. Most early US sales were limited to Texas and southern California. American customers also had the option of European delivery, in which case they could also get a cheaper model with the basic B4B engine. By the 1957 model year, engine displacement was increased to 1.6 L and both single downdraft- B16A and twin side-draught carburettor B16B versions were offered.

The Douglas C47, known as the Dakota in the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth services, became the world's best known transport aircraft. The type saw widespread use by the Allies during the Second World War and by Air Forces and airlines post-war. The C47 Skytrain and C53 Skytrooper were military versions of the DC3 airliner. The DC3 first flew in 1935 and was ordered by America's airlines. Most RAF Dakotas had been retired or sold by 1950, the last active aircraft leaving the service in 1970. British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) took their first deliveries of Douglas Dakota C47s in 1943 and the last of approximately 60 aircraft in 1946. During WWII Dakotas were operated by both the RAF and BOAC. After the war, BOAC sold the fleet, fourteen of which went to British European Airways when the airline was formed in 1946. One of the Dakotas acted as a testbed for the Rolls-Royce Dart engine before it powered the Vickers Viscount, the world's first turbo-prop aircraft.
