The South African Music Encyclopedia (SAME) is a project that was initially launched under the auspices of the National Bureau for Educational and Social Research and has since 1969 become the responsibility of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). In all, 17 years' work has gone into this project and the appearance of Volume I represents an important milestone in the documentation of South African Music.
Music in South Africa has reached the stage where it is desirable that the development of its various components (European, Coloured, Indian, African and indigenous) be traced in detail so that this development can be seen in overall perspective. The compilers of the SAME have undertaken this task and hope that the Encyclopedia will lead to further research and documentary work in this field.
