This very early Vetterli bayonet started life with a long 20" plus blade and without the cut out lower muzzle ring that was introduced in 1875. It would have later been modified in the WWI era from the Model 1870 issue to the Model of 1870/1915 model with a shortened blade length of 9 1/2" to match the overall length of the WWI front line rifle the M-1891 CARCANO 6.5mm. It also had its original hooked quillon cut off. The brass and steel mounted scabbard has also modified in length to match, this example most probably served with the Italian Army in their Ethiopian Wars or in the Northern Desert against the Allies. A battlefield souvenir brought home by a victorious SAFFA? The serial number is visible on the ricasso of the blade of the bayonet.. This one should fit any WW1 6.5mm Vetterli rifle or WW2 Carcano. Very good, field-used condition with the long spring and original wooden scales intact.
