Description: Semi-Porcelain 1908  1911 Pheasant dinner plate Ref: P-83
Maker: F. Winkle & Co. England
Date: 1908-1911
History: Partners Winkle and Wood started the Pearl Pottery in Hanley in the year 1885. In 1888 the Colonial Pottery Works was built and established in Whieldon Road, quite close to Stoke.
In 1890 the partners split, F. Winkle continued as sole owner of the Colonial Pottery and Wood took over the Pearl Pottery works in Hanley. In the early 1900s the business as acquired by William and Joseph Hewitt, but still continued trading under F. Winkle & Co. In 1911 the company became a Limited business and the letters LTD were added to the backstamp. By 1931 Ridgeways became the new owner.
Marks/Observations: The Pheasant design was immensely popular and continued for a number of years. Take note of the backstamp, the lack of LTD places the plate between the dates 1908-1911. This is a transfer-ware design on a semi-porcelain base. Note the slight variations in the colour of the head and wings of the pheasant. In this particular plate it is grey, whilst some designs are in blue.
Condition: The plate remains in very good condition throughout showing only slight wear.  No cracks or chips are evident.
Dimensions: 22.5 cm in diameter, 2.1 cm in height.
Price: R220.00
