The Search Within: The Inner Experiences of a Psychoanalyst
Theodor Reik

Out of unsparing self-revelation Theodor Reik has developed a wide-ranging view of the mind and activities of man. The Search Within is a distillation of his thought. The first part consists of Reik's recollections of his mentor, Freud, an absorbing, human portrait that is highly readable and free of the technical language of psychoanalysis. Reik's entire correspondence with Freud is reprinted with notes by Reik. As an analyst, Reik focuses first of all on himself, disclosing his innermost thoughts without compromise. From his store of reading and wisdom he produces fresh and lively interpretations of works by Goethe, Shakespeare, and Mahler. And he attempts to show how psychoanalytic discovery can solve problems that have resisted the efforts of other sciences. With constant illumination from his personal experience, he goes beyond Freud into certain fields of psychological research into prehistory.
