"Flora Sandes, daughter of an English country parson, achieved something that was remarkable for a woman even by Great War standards : she enlisted as a private in the Serbian army. After volunteering as a nurse in the Balkans, she became deeply involved in the Serbian cause and in the struggle against the Bulgar invasion, and she decided to support it actively."
