In The White Nile, Alan Moorehead describes the discovery of the source of the river, starting the epic journey in 1856, when Richard Burton, the wandering scholar, and the soldier Speke vanished for two years. He finishes it in 1900, when "the mightiest river in the world" had become an open highway from Central Africa to the Mediterranean. Between these dates we read of thrilling struggles against hostile tribes, disease, exhaustion and famine, meet a wide variety of picturesque native rulers, and see the slave trade in all its horror. Alan McCrae Moorehead, AO, OBE (1910 - 1983), was a war correspondent and author of popular histories, most notably The White Nile (1960) and The Blue Nile (1962).
